While it isn’t a secret anymore that a next-gen Toyota Innova is on the cards and has been spotted testing numerous times, the Japanese manufacturer won’t hang up on the current model just yet. According to a report, the next-gen Toyota Innova will be priced much higher than the current model on sale in India, and replacing the current Innova will be an Innova Cross, which will be more or less the current car, with adornments that will make it look like an MUV on stilts. With lesser features than the outgoing car, the Innova Cross will be powered by the existing 2.5-liter oil-burner, mated to a 5-speed manual box. It will be priced to compete against the Honda Mobilio, Maruti Ertiga, Renault Lodgy and other upcoming products. If the report is to be believed, Toyota has even registered the Innova Cross name.
The next-gen Toyota Innova on the other hand will be powered by a downsized, more efficient, powerful and modern powerplant that will propel a chassis that could be a good 80-90 kgs lighter than the current one. The new car might even shun its rounded curves in favor of an edgy, muscular look, and with a well appointed, luxurious cabin, will be priced at a premium. According to the report, both cars could be launched by late 2016 or early 2017. However, Toyota might just plan something around the upcoming Auto Expo next year, as the new Innova is already being tested, while slapping some cladding on the current Innova shouldn’t take that long.
