Japanese automaker Mazda recently lifted the wraps off its new 2014 Mazda3 hatchback. The new Mazda3 is a Ford Focus and Hyundai Elantra GT adversary and sales in North America are expected to commence in September this year. The hatchback will also give birth to a sedan variant at a later stage.
The Mazda3’s styling is based on the Kodo – Soul of Motion – design language and comes across as aggressive and premium on the same time.
The new Mazda3 is shorter by 1.8 inches. However, it has a wheelbase that is longer by 2.4 inches. The car is also shorter by 0.6 inches and is wider by 1.6 inches. The new Mazda3 has a coefficient of drag of 0.255, lower than the outgoing car’s 0.275. The car is also 90 kgs lighter.
The car gets three petrol engine and a diesel engine. Petrol engine option includes 1.5L, 2.0L and 2.5L motors and the sole diesel motor of offer is the SKYACTIV-D 2.2L clean diesel engine. The engines would get 6-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual gearbox and 6-speed SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission. They will also get i-ELOOP brake energy regeneration system.
The car gets a long equipment list which includes Active Driving Display and a Heads Up display unit.
The Japanese market will also get a hybrid version of the car that will be powered by a small displacement gasoline motor and an electric motor for additional juice. This variant could come with three driving modes- all electric, all petrol and electric + petrol.
