After launching the new Genesis luxury sedan in the international markets recently, Hyundai is mulling to launch the flagship luxury sedan in the Indian market in limited numbers. The new 2015 Genesis employs Hyundai’s new “Fluidic Sculpture 2.0” design language and has plenty of features and acres of real estate to be a worthy contender in luxury car segment.
Since the number of Genesis units that would come to India will be limited, Hyundai India will be taking the CBU route to launch the Genesis here. With the launch of the Hyundai Genesis in India, HMIL, for the first time ever, will be entering the luxury sedan segment in India. Currently, the most luxurious sedan in the Hyundai stable is the Sonata.
The Hyundai Genesis, at 4,990 mm in length, is slightly longer than the Mercedes E-class sedan. In terms of size, the Genesis also challenges the Audi A6 and the BMW 5 series.
The new 2015 Genesis starts at 38,000 USD in the US markets, which is a whole 10,000 cheaper than the BMW 5 series. When converted at the current exchange rate, the Genesis’ price in INR comes out to roughly 22.4 lakh. Add up the CBU import duties, and we are sure to see a price tag of more than INR 40 lakhs, at which price, the car might lose much of its ‘value for money quotient’. However, all is not lost for Hyundai as currently, the BMW 5 Series range in India starts around INR 50 lakhs mark.
Hyundai India will be launching the Genesis with the 3.8-litre V6 motor that churns out a healthy 311bhp of max power. This engine comes mated to an eight speed automatic transmission. Hence, the powertrain of Hyundai Genesis too is at par with its immediate rivals.
Now, the question that arises is- Will you spend above INR 40 lakhs on a car with a Hyundai badge on it? Won’t you instead pay few lakhs more and go for a German luxury sedan instead?
