A monkey managed to start a bus at a station in Bareilly, drove off and hit two other parked buses. As the conductor of an Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) bus left the empty vehicle and the driver decided to take a quick nap on the last row before departure, a monkey climbed in and slithered into the driver’s seat. The inquisitive primate started the engine with the ignition key, that was still in its slot, waking the driver up.
As the driver rushed into the cabin, barely apprehending the bizarre situation, the panicked ape jumped off the bus, but not before flicking the gear lever to second. The bus allegedly started to move without a pilot at the helm, as bystanders ran for cover, and hapless authorities looked on. The driver finally managed to regain control of the vehicle, but by then, it had already hit and damaged two other buses parked close by.
All this monkey business is getting on the nerves of UPSRTC staff, as they’ve become a regular menace at bus stations and workshops, where they often fiddle with vehicles undergoing repair. They have also been seen damaging CCTV cameras at stations. Municipal authorities have been requested to get a grip on the situation by catching hold of the wretched animals and transferring them elsewhere.
