Maruti Suzuki’s partnership with AIIMS and IRF shows its commitment to enhancing road safety across India. Through a meticulously designed training program, the company aims to empower individuals to act as first responders during the critical “golden hour” following an accident. The golden hour, often termed as the first hour post-accident, is crucial for administering timely medical intervention, which can significantly increase the chances of survival.
Training Approach
The First Responder training program, conducted at Maruti Suzuki’s Institute of Driving and Traffic Research (IDTR) facilities in Haryana, Delhi, and Bihar, witnessed the participation of 8,500 individuals, predominantly commercial drivers. Collaborating with JPN APEX Trauma Centre, AIIMS, New Delhi, the training curriculum encompassed a wide array of emergency care techniques.

Dr. Amit Gupta, Professor of Trauma Surgery and Critical Care at JPN Apex Trauma Centre, AIIMS, emphasized the importance of bystander intervention in trauma care. He highlighted the critical role played by bystanders, particularly commercial drivers, in administering immediate assistance to accident victims. The training modules, developed in conjunction with WHO guidelines, have garnered positive feedback from stakeholders, indicating their effectiveness in real-world scenarios.
Commitment to Road Safety
Mr. Rahul Bharti, Executive Officer, Corporate Affairs at Maruti Suzuki India Limited, reiterated the company’s holistic approach to road safety. He emphasized the significance of post-accident care as the fifth pillar of Maruti Suzuki’s road safety strategy, alongside vehicle engineering, education, evaluation, and enforcement. The First Responder training initiative aligns seamlessly with Sustainable Development Goal 3, reflecting Maruti Suzuki’s dedication to societal well-being.
Key Highlights of the Program
The First Responder Training Program equips participants with critical life-saving techniques, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), hemorrhage control, proper helmet removal, splint and sling usage, and safe victim transportation. Moreover, emphasis is placed on activating emergency response systems promptly, thereby maximizing the chances of survival, especially during the critical golden hour.
