While Maruti did catch the right nerve with their TV commercials which featured actors obsessed with fuel efficiency figures, this piece of news is capable of astounding them. Although in the works for some time now, Maruti’s ingeniously built diesel engine has been spotted in the Celerio’s engine bay for the first time. Reported to be a 793cc, twin-cylinder motor, when it makes its debut in the Y9T load carrier first and then the Celerio, it will be the smallest diesel engine to power a passenger car in India.
Expected to pump out around 50 bhp, the Maruti Celerio diesel might not require any TV commercial slot or maybe even a marketing strategy to sell itself, as Gaadiwaadi.com claims that the motor returns an incredibly impressive efficiency figure of 30.1 kpl. If that happens for real, the diesel powered Maruti Celerio will snatch the most fuel-efficient car title from it’s elder sibling, the Ciaz, which has been rated for 26.2 kpl (ARAI rated). Still rubbing your eyes? Maruti could even launch an AMT variant of the Celerio diesel, which will then become the cheapest, most fuel efficient automatic car on sale.
