Mahindra Unveils the Thar Roxx: A New Era for the Iconic SUV

One of Mahindra’s most anticipated launches of the year is the Thar Roxx, a new 5-door variant of the beloved Mahindra Thar. This eagerly awaited model has captured attention through numerous spy shots and teasers, showcasing its distinctive exterior and interior features. The Thar Roxx has been revealed in official black and white colors, adding a fresh look to the SUV’s design.

Design Updates: A Bold New Look

The Mahindra Thar has long enjoyed a cult following, celebrated for its off-road prowess but critiqued for its limited practicality. The absence of rear doors and a proper rear bench has been a concern for buyers seeking a balance between rugged capability and family-friendly features. Enter the Thar Roxx—a 5-door solution aimed at addressing these concerns.

The new images reveal significant design updates, including a vertical handle for the rear door, adding a rugged, masculine touch. The rear quarter glass is now triangular to accommodate a thicker B-pillar, and the SUV features a slanted roof. The alloy wheels sport a fresh design, and the circular rear wheel arches of the outgoing model are replaced with more angular counterparts.

Platform and Construction: Enhanced Durability and Performance

The Thar Roxx is more than a mere extension of the 3-door Thar. It features a completely new platform and advanced off-road technology. Positioned below the Scorpio N in Mahindra’s lineup, the Thar Roxx utilizes a lighter version of the 3G platform introduced with the Scorpio N, reducing weight by around 40 kg for improved performance and efficiency. The SUV boasts a high-tensile steel body shell and metal hard top, enhancing durability.

Suspension and Ride Quality

For suspension, the Thar Roxx features an independent front setup with double wishbones and a multilink rear with Watts linkage, complemented by Mahindra’s ‘Frequency Dependent Damping’ technology for superior ride quality.

Interior Features

Inside, the Thar Roxx is equipped with a soft-touch dashboard featuring contrasting yellow stitching, a panoramic sunroof, and cruise control. Off-road enthusiasts will appreciate the electronically locking rear differential, while ventilated seats offer added comfort. The interior will include a digital MID and a 10.25-inch infotainment system, with higher variants featuring a Harman Kardon sound system, a panoramic sunroof, and soft-touch materials. Expected features include a powered driver’s seat, a 360-degree camera, wireless charging, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

Engine Options: Power and Performance

Engine details remain under wraps, but reports suggest the Thar Roxx will offer Mahindra’s mHawk Gen2 diesel engine with a 2.2-liter displacement. The entry-level variant may produce 150 hp and 350 Nm, while the higher variant could deliver 172 hp and 370 Nm. The 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter automatic gearboxes will be available.

The petrol version of the Thar Roxx will feature a 2.0-liter turbo engine, with power outputs likely to be 160 hp and 330 Nm for the base model, and 175 hp and 380 Nm for the higher trims.

Launch and Pricing: What to Expect

Scheduled for launch on August 15, the Thar Roxx is expected to start at around ₹12.99 lakh (ex-showroom). It will compete with the Force Gurkha 5-door and offer a larger alternative to the Maruti Suzuki Jimny.
