KTM Unveils 990 RC R Prototype; Road-Legal Supersport

KTM has unveiled the 990 RC R prototype, marking its return to the road-going sportbike segment since the discontinuation of the RC8 in 2015.

The Successor to KTM RC8

The KTM 990 RC R is poised to be KTM’s all-new flagship road-homologated sports bike, succeeding the iconic RC8. Following the discontinuation of the RC8 series in 2015, KTM shifted its focus towards naked and adventure motorcycles. However, the unveiling of the 990 RC R signifies a strategic move by KTM to reclaim its position in the competitive supersport market.

Power and Performance

Powered by a robust 947cc LC8c parallel twin engine, the 990 RC R promises a claimed output of 128hp and 103Nm of torque. Notably, the 990 RC R features a steel frame and diecast aluminum subframe which is optimized for better weight distribution and agility.

Handling and Stability

The KTM 990RC R is equipped with fully adjustable WP Apex suspension and cast aluminum wheels wrapped in Michelin tires. Designed within a wind tunnel, this motorcycle incorporates aerodynamic wings inspired by KTM’s MotoGP bikes, providing additional stability during braking and cornering maneuvers.

Track Edition and Beyond

In addition to the road-going prototype, KTM plans to introduce a track edition of the 990 RC R. Stripping away road-legal necessities, the track edition will feature performance-enhancing components such as a full-system Akrapovic exhaust and protective parts. KTM emphasizes the track-focused nature of the RC 990 R, with minimal modifications required to transition from street-spec to track-spec configurations.

A Bold Return

KTM’s decision to reenter the middleweight segment with the 990 RC R signals a bold move to challenge competitors such as the Kawasaki ZX6R, Ducati Panigale V2, and Honda CBR600RR. This move is made to reignite excitement among the supersport category and elevate the level of competition.
