The India-bound, all-new Fortuner SUV from Toyota has scored well in the New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP). The Toyota SW4 aka 2016 Toyota Fortuner has received a 5-star rating in a crash test conducted by Latin NCAP in ADAC. This is not the first time for the SUV to have scored high in a crash test. Last year the Fortuner had scored a 33.95 out of a total of 37 in the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP), resulting a 5-star rating and a ‘Good’ remark in the Whiplash and pedestrian protection column.

The officials from Latin NCAP state that the Toyota Fortuner (SW4) is the SUV version of the Hilux pickup truck. It was crash tested in ADAC as an audit test to check if the SUV offers the same protection levels as the Hiluxs tested in 2015. The tests confirmed a solid consistency between the protections offered by the Fortuner compared to the pick-up versions, even performing better in some biomechanical aspects.

The complete report card with in-depth details of the score distribution of the crash test are not yet available, but the numbers are claimed to be similar or rather better than the ones from the Toyota Hilux test. The India bound SUV has been highly anticipated in the country, it also skipped the 2016 Auto Expo. Recently the TRD Sportivo version of the 2016 Toyota Fortuner was launched in Thailand for 17,19,500 Baht ( INR 31 Lakhs approx.). In Thailand, the new Fortuner rolls out in four variants powered by three engine configurations. Out of the four variants, one is petrol powered while the remaining three are diesel powered. It is also offered in two drivetrain layouts – 2WD and 4WD.

As for the details of the Indian spec model, the auto-maker might be taking baby steps with their new SUV as the Government of India is banning and implementing new rules for high displacement vehicles. And since all the international variants of the new Fortuner are above the objectionable 2000cc therefore, it might face some difficulties in stepping a foot in the Desi market.

Here is the video of the Latin NCAP test of the Toyota Hilux, on which the new 2016 Fortuner is based on-
