The reigning king of the scooter market, Honda Activa, is in no mood to put down the guns as this automatic scooter has yet again managed to sell huge number of units, month on month, outpacing Hero Motocorp’s best selling motorcycle, Splendor in the month of August. Honda Activa has managed to achieve sales figure of 1,91,883 units for the month of August. Hero MotoCorp sold about 1,65,779 units of Splendor in similar time frame.
Honda Activa was first launched in 2001 and there was no looking back ever since. Even today, this automatic scooter is so much in demand that people have to wait for weeks before getting their own Activa. Yadvinder S Guleria Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) said, “Since its launch in 2001, Activa has entered its 14th year in India and still we have a waiting period for the model. That shows that there is preference of customers towards scooter, particularly of the brand.”
He further added, “Today, we still have pending order of 60,000 across different models out of which 70 per cent is that of Activa.”
Honda recently introduced the 125 variant of the Activa to break the 110cc monotony and offer consumers a more powerful product with a tried and tested brand name. HMSI reported an increase in scooter sales at 2,23,665 units from 1,39,392 units in July 2013 which is a rise of 60.45 per cent.
With new products from different manufacturers entering the scooter market every now and then, we believe that Honda should try and increase its production even further to bring down the waiting period. Also, the company should consider bringing in more premium products in the scooter segment into the Indian market.
