We might have witnessed Supercar shows, expos and drives in our own backyard, but we’d say it comes nowhere close to the annual Gumball 3000 Supercar Rally. Conceptualised in 1999 by skateboarder and race car driver Maximillion Cooper, the Gumball 3000 sees the most exotic set of wheels on the planet take to the streets and drive over a distance of 4800 kms.
The rally comprises of a supercar convoy that’s flagged off from Miami with the cars being driven through Atlanta, Charlotte to New York. The cars are then loaded onto a cargo plane for transportation to London where the wheels take to the streets and the cheering crowd. Later transported by train from London to Paris, the supercars are put up for public exhibition. The rally resumes from Paris and rolls towards Barcelona before concluding the trip in Ibiza.
And it’s not just about the supercars or the funky livery or the drive that makes the event special, the participants list reads out prominent personalities from the field of sports to Hollywood. The celebrity clad roadtrip isn’t cheap to participate either and cost’s a cool US$ 40,000 per participant.
Having kicked off from Miami on the 6th of June, the Gumball 3000 Supercar Rally is underway and is scheduled to wrap up at Ibiza on June 11th. Here are a few snapshots of how the exotic rally goes about and with 120 supercars screaming through the streets in tandem, we’d say the show is nothing short of goosebumps. We wish we were at the rally at present…sigh!
