BYD, the Chinese automotive giant renowned for its electric vehicles, has turned the spotlight toward India by filing a trademark for the name ‘Sea Lion.’ This move has ignited speculation that a new electric vehicle (EV) from BYD might soon grace Indian roads.

A fresh BYD model, tentatively named the Sea Lion, has been spotted undergoing testing on foreign shores. While it’s highly likely that this new model will bear the Sea Lion moniker. However, the question remains whether it will be introduced in India as is, or if BYD will adapt an existing global model to suit the Indian market.

The Sea Lion ‘s Potential Dimensions and Platform

The test mule spotted abroad is believed to belong to the midsize SUV category, estimated to measure 4,770mm in length, 1,910mm in width, and 1,620mm in height. A generous wheelbase of 2,900mm is expected. Additionally, spy shots of the Sea Lion SUV suggest a sleek, coupe-like roofline. Industry insiders predict that this model will be built on BYD’s e-platform 3.0. Compared to its counterpart, the Atto 3, the Sea Lion is projected to be 315mm longer, 35mm wider, and 5mm taller. Impressively, it’s also expected to have a 180mm longer wheelbase.

Staying true to the brand’s pattern, the Sea Lion is anticipated to offer a 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Moreover, spy shots hint at the presence of a flat-bottom steering wheel and a compact drive selector, similar to the one featured in the upcoming BYD Seal sedan.

Performance enthusiasts won’t be disappointed with the Sea Lion’s rumored powertrain options. Rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variants are in the cards. The rear-wheel drive might house an electric motor generating 204hp and 310Nm of torque, mirroring the Atto 3. Meanwhile, the all-wheel drive version could boast a dual-motor setup, combining for an impressive 530hp (217hp from the front, 313hp from the rear). Fueling this power will likely be an 82.5kWh battery with a potential range of up to 700km, positioning the Sea Lion as a contender against the acclaimed Tesla Model Y.

Enthusiasts eagerly await the pricing strategy for the Sea Lion, which is expected to occupy a slot above the Atto 3 SUV – priced at Rs 33.99 lakh (ex-showroom, India). A comparison with its American rival, the Model Y, reveals that the dual-motor Sea Lion boasts 45hp more than the top-tier Model Y. Even the entry-level Model Y surpasses the single-motor Sea Lion by a margin of 60hp.

While BYD aims to make its mark with the Sea Lion, another electric automotive titan, Tesla, has its sights set on India. Tesla is actively engaged in discussions with the Indian government to establish a manufacturing facility in the country. While the exact location of this factory is yet to be finalized. Tesla’s India venture is likely to kick off with the launch of the Model Y and an all-new entry-level model. And is to be produced at the upcoming Indian facility. This move signals a promising stride toward a greener automotive landscape in India.
