Before you think of rushing to the local Volvo showroom to buy a car, let me tell you- this scheme is not available in India. Volvo is flying American buyers to Europe for the delivery of their car. With this, Volvo saves on import taxes and dealer markups.
Such programs have been in existence for some years now and are offered by luxury players such as Volvo, Porsche, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The details of each program varies slightly between each manufacturer, but the basic exercise is the same mostly. You are flown to Europe where you collect your new car and drive it while you enjoy your trip in Europe. Once your trip is over, the manufacturer will ship your car home for you, usually covering all costs, including taxes.
Another reason behind this is that it also creates brand loyalty, as most customers will never forget their trip of a lifetime. It’s also useful for customers, as the car is often much cheaper than it would have been buying in America due to the savings on import tax and dealer markups.
Here are the program details straight from Volvo’s official website :
Round trip for two included. To be eligible for Overseas Delivery as part of our Tourist Program, you must be a U.S. resident and have both a valid driver’s license and a passport. You must also be at least 18 years old. Although we’re sure you could spend a lifetime exploring Europe, you must send your new Volvo back to the United States within six months of taking European delivery.
The program includes two complimentary round trip airline tickets to Scandinavia, VIP delivery, six months European auto registration and two weeks of European auto insurance. Return shipment of your new car to the United States is at no charge. There are no U.S. Customs Duty or port clearance fees for an Overseas Delivery Tourist Program purchase.

– One nights’ hotel stay in Goteborg, Sweden (when taking delivery at the factory) *
– Shuttle service from Goteborg airport (when taking delivery at the factory)
