100 Percent Switch-Over To E-Vehicles By 2030 Is Impossible, Says Toyota

The plan to switch every petrol or diesel powered car by an electric one has received mixed-reactions by the automobile sector. While some manufacturers have already started to execute their plan to bring electric vehicles or hybrid vehicles in the near future, some manufacturers like Toyota have absolutely no plan to bring those to India.

Toyota is not against the decision made by the Government of India but the company will wait till the progress in the charging infrastructure of the country. “Toyota (Motor Corporation) does have an electric vehicle (in its portfolio and launched in some overseas markets) but we (TKM) will wait for the charging infrastructure to come up in India before we ask Toyota Motor Corporation to give us (TKM) electric vehicle products,” said Shekar Viswanathan, senior official of Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) in an interview given to PTI. “I don’t think 100 percent (switch-over) will happen. I think it will be more like 30 percent by 2030 and maybe higher percentage by 2040,” he further added.

Toyota is one of the biggest hybrid-car manufacturers, with sales surpassing 10.05 million units (till February 14, 2017). According to Viswanathan, the company is capable of bringing electric-vehicles in India at a short-term notice but before they add any electric vehicle in their portfolio, they need the assurance from the government for a better framework when it comes to charging stations.

With 21 million vehicles sold annually in India, the governments push towards bringing an electric-revolution in India is expected to face many complications and this is probably one of the first ones.
