Some spyshots have surfaced on the internet suggesting that Hyundai has started the testing of their upcoming 2017 Santro. Last month, Hyundai completed 20 years of its foundation in India. At the celebratory occasion, the automaker broke the news that they are planning to get the long gone tall boy hatchback – Santro back in the Indian market in the latest avatar. The car is set for a comeback by the last quarter of 2017.
The spy pics are not enough to authoritatively conclude that they are of the hatchback we are talking about but several reports suggests the same. If the images are to be believed, then the disguised Santro doesn’t seem to be tall anymore. Also the Santro does not feature any cues of the company’s Fluidic design philosophy. Previously, the hatchback was a player of the entry level segment but the pics suggest that the Santro in its latest avatar will be a much premium offering. It features projector headlamps, LED fog lamps, a small front grille and a large air dam. The rear shows that the Santro has received a wider stance, a big chunky rear bumper and a relatively smaller tailgate.
The news of Hyundai bringing back the Santro has brought several memories from late 1990s. It was not only the first family car for a lot of Indian families but also happened to be the first ever car from the South Korean automaker in India. In its lifespan of 14 years, the Santro received many upgrades and a second generation was introduced in early 2000. The Santro in the Xing avatar was finally phased out a couple of years ago. We don’t quite miss the Santro as such, since a major chunk of black and yellow cabs that ply on Mumbai roads are the Santro Xing! Thats all folks!
