We had been closely following Renault India’s plan to launch its price warrior SUV for India- the Duster. The rugged, spacious and proportionately designed vehicle has initiated a new price war of sorts. This seems to be the only way for the company to get going in India, as the Fluence, Koleos and Pulse have not been able to do much with their rather premium pricing.
The Duster for India is available with two engine options – a 1.6 liter petrol and a 1.5 liter diesel available in two different states of tune. Of the two, the 1.5 liter dCi diesel, without doubt will form the lion’s share of the Duster’s sale.

The duster seems to have taken the fight to the hot selling products like the Scorpio and even the MUVs such as the Xylo and the newly introduced Ertiga, which has been an instant hit. The Duster is produced in Renault Nissan’s Orgadam plant near Chennai and employs a very highly level of localization to keep the costs at a bare minimum. The plant also exports the SUV to some of the European countries including the UK.
While Duster has been acclaimed worldwide by scribes as a no-nonsense, high on practicality and value product, it may have to face some challenges in India – limited number of dealerships being one of them. The French carmaker is working towards taking its dealerships count to 100 by the end of 2012.

The Duster, which is approximately the size of the now defunct Tucson sports a chrome finished front grille, smart looking headlamps, a bumper that sports neatly integrated fog lamps and an air dam placed inside a skid plate-like housing.
In the side profile, the car has well pronounced wheel arches and the 5 spoke mags gel well with the beefy design. That said, the D pillar looks a tad too wide and the car could have done with wider windows in the rear doors. Ditto for the rear quarter glass. The Duster sure looks rugged and sporty in this profile but the aforementioned changes and blacked out B pillars could have given the car that extra character.
Coming to the rear end, the car continues to look beefy and integrated reflectors and skid plate are integrated into the bumper. The chrome plated number plate bulb holder and some smart surfacing on the hatch that gels seamlessly with the design of the tail lamps ensues that special touch to the rear.

Our sources informed us that the car will be launched at a starting price of INR 7.25 lakhs (for base variant of petrol model) and the info from them has turned out to be pretty accurate. At INR 7.19 lakhs, the car finds itself bang in the middle of upper C segment sedan territory and basically, this is exactly what Reanult intends.
