A couple of years ago, an unknown Middle Eastern supercar maker revealed the 5000hp monster, Devel Sixteen at the 2013 Dubai Motor Show. Following the performance claims of a 0-100 kmph in 1.8 seconds, a top speed of 560 kmph and 5000 horsepower, the makers were ridiculed by the automotive world. The Devel Sixteen didn’t show up on the automotive horizon, thereafter, until now.
In 2015 the Sixteen’s bespoke V16 engine has almost hit the claimed 5000 hp mark, recording an insane 4,515 hp at 6900 rpm while running on 36 (local atmospheric pressure unit) psi of boost when strapped to an engine dyno. The torque figure also stands at a massive 4771 Nm at 6600 rpm. Even with a drop of 15 psi the monster engine managed to deliver 3006 hp. More than three times the power of the Bugatti Veyron’s quad-turbo 8.0-litre W16 engine.
Interestingly, according to Steve Morris Engines, the dyno being used for the test couldn’t withstand over 4515 hp and if tested on a suitable dyno, the engine can generate over 5000 hp.
The huge V16 under the Devel’s hood is designed using the LS architecture (Chevrolet’s third generation small block V8 design) and is built by Steve Morris Engines.The engine of the Devel Sixteen displaces 12.3-litres and includes four huge 81 mm turbochargers. Additionally, the completely bespoke engine includes a billet block and camshaft as well as titanium valves.
Recently a video by the engine maker, Steve Morris Engines, surfaced on the internet. The video holds enough substance to prove the carmaker’s claims right.
