The tortoise you see here in this image goes by the name Mrs. T. In an unfortunate incident, some sadistic rats high on blood raided her abode and gnawed onto her front limbs until she was left with none. Mrs. T couldn’t move after the incident, and one of the choices left for her owner Jude Ryder, from West Wales was to put her down. She had anyway footed a bill of nearly $1500 to the vet, and there really wasn’t much she could have done to improve the plight of the poor quadruped.
The idea of implanting a prosthetic foot for the animal was also shot down, as the limbs had been bitten down too much for the arrangement to work. Enter Dale, Mrs Ryder’s son, who’s a mechanical engineer. The man created a harness and joined it to a pair of smooth spinning wheels, and Voila, Mrs. T could push herself ahead at twice the speed she attained with her legs!
“It was like fitting her with a turbo charger. She’s going double the speed she used to,” Ryder told the Telegraph. “She uses her back legs to push herself along. She seems quite happy, but it’s difficult to tell with a tortoise.”
