Tata Nano Diesel Launch Plans Shelved

Tata Motors has been testing the Nano diesel for quite a long time now. Now, in the latest development, it has surfaced that Tata Nano Diesel launch plan has been shelved. Unviability of the diesel variant, especially confirming to the BS IV emission norms is the reason behind the shelving on the Tata Nano Diesel launch plans.

“There’s no proposition to launch a diesel Nano at the entry level of the market,” a person with direct knowledge of the development said.

Tata currently sells the Nano at a starting price of INR 1.41 lakh going all the way upto INR 2.58 lakh for the top-end variant with power steering. The Tata Nano diesel was said to come with a 800cc 2 pot diesel motor. Tata is currently testing the Nano with a 1.0 liter petrol engine which is rumored to output 60 bhp. This engine may come mated with the F-tronic AMT, spy pics of which have been posted by us . (Click here to read about Tata Nano Twist AMT)

A company spokesperson confirmed that there’s no definite period for the diesel Nano. “At any given time, we work on a number of projects and we have the diesel technology readily available. Nano remains an important brand and we constantly continue to evaluate the best market-suited variants for it but given the changing dynamics of fuel pricing in the country, we are not immediately focused on announcing a go-to-market date for this,” the company spokesperson said.

Although the Nano diesel plans have been shelved, the company is planning to use the same engine in its upcoming commercial vehicles.
