While there have been rumors of a 400 cc motor being in the works, during a conference call with a leading news network, Managing Director and CEO of Eicher Motors, Mr Siddhartha Lal has confirmed that two new engine platforms are currently under development, based on which multiple products could be launched. He further stated that the new products will be in the range of 250 cc – 750 cc and the company expects to introduce them starting next year.

When asked to elaborate about the new products, Mr Lal mentioned that RE will stick to its core strength of making lifestyle, mid-range machines and would not make bikes which are ‘extreme’ or ‘very sporty’. However, he added that the bikes would perform higher than their current crop of motorcycles and will target international markets, with RE churning out multiple machines powered by these two new engines, at least for another decade.

While we expect the 250 cc motor to be a single cylinder thumper, we hope we are wrong and it turns out to be a quarter liter twin. The bigger 750 cc motor could well be a twin cylinder unit Royal Enfield fans have long waited for. With an aim to achieve global leadership in the mid-size motorcycle segment, RE will witness an investment of Rs 500 crore this year, which will be utilized for capacity expansion at their Oragadam plant, R&D, new product development and setting up technology development centres in Chennai and UK.
