River Indie : The SUV of Scooters?

The Indie e-scooter from Bengaluru-based startup River is now available for Rs 1.25 lakh. With features like ample storage space, pannier mounts, front footpegs, and crash protectors, the Indie prioritises functionality. There are three colour options for the River Indie: Monsoon Blue, Summer Red, and Spring Yellow.

Specifications and Features

A 4kWh battery pack with an IP67 rating and a stated real-world range of 120 kilometres powers the River Indie. According to The River, a typical charger can charge the battery to 80% capacity in 5 hours. The Indie can reach a top speed of 90 kph and can accelerate from 0 to 40 kph in 3.9 seconds because to its mid-mounted motor’s 6.7kW (peak) and 26Nm of torque ratings. Both the scooter’s battery and its motor have a five-year, 50,000-mile warranty.

Similar to the Yamaha Aerox and the Aprilia SR160, it has 14-inch wheels, a 770mm seat height, a telescopic fork, and a front and rear suspension system with twin shock absorbers. The Indie sports a 165mm ground clearance, 240mm/200mm (front/rear) disc braking setup, and CBS. Its advertised gradeability (ability to climb inclines) is 18 degrees, which is higher than the Ola S1 Pro but lower than the Ather 450X (20 degrees) (15 degrees).

The rider of the Indie can choose between the three ride modes of Eco, Ride, and Rush on the vehicle’s colour LCD dash. Other helpful features include 90-degree valve stems, a side stand cut-off, and reverse parking assistance. According to River, the Indie has the segment’s longest and broadest seat.

Crash guards and front footpegs, two unique characteristics not found on other electric scooters, are present on the River Indie. Two USB charging outlets are also included, one on the handlebar and one in the glovebox (which also gets a light). The Indie comes with all-LED lighting and a variety of add-on baggage choices, including a top box with a capacity of 25 litres and pannier sets with a capacity of up to 40 litres.

Price and Competitors

The River Indie is more expensive than the TVS iQube S but is priced lower than the Bajaj Chetak, Ola S1 Pro, and Ather 450X at Rs 1.25 lakh (introductory price). The Indie is an electric scooter that, like the Chetak and the iQube, is more focused on practicality than pure sports prowess.

Bookings for the River Indie can be made starting today on the corporate website; delivery are expected to start in August 2023 and the charger is included in the purchase. Although not this year, the corporation has ambitions to set up a fast-charging network. River will begin selling the Indie e-scooter in Bengaluru in the near future, with hopes to spread to 50 Indian cities by 2024.
