MG EV SUV Heading to India as Rebadged Baojun Yep

In an exciting development, MG’s parent company, SAIC, has filed a design patent for the Baojun Yep electric SUV in India, signaling its intentions to introduce the model to the Indian market. The Baojun Yep was recently unveiled in production-spec in China and is expected to hit Indian roads under the MG badge by 2025.

Upcoming MG Version of Baojun Yep

The India-bound version of the Baojun Yep is likely to remain mostly unchanged from its China-spec counterpart. With only the MG badges placed in the front and rear. The overall design, including the retro-themed SUV’s distinctive 3-door layout and accommodating four seats, is expected to be retained. Moreover, the Baojun Yep will share its Global Small Electric Vehicle platform (GSEV) with the MG Comet EV, another electric offering from the brand.

Additionally the design of the Yep features square LED headlights, a rugged-looking bumper, plastic cladding on the lower body, roof rails, and prominent wheel arches, giving it a robust and distinctive appearance. It also boasts an asymmetrical window design, adding to its quirky charm. The dimensions of the Yep measure 3,381mm in length, 1,685mm in width, 1,721mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,110mm. Compared to the Comet, the Yep is slightly larger, offering more space for passengers.

Powertrain

Powering the Baojun Yep is a single electric motor situated on the rear axle, generating 68hp and 140Nm of torque. Its top speed is limited to 100kph. The electric motor is powered by a 28.1kWh lithium-ion phosphate battery, providing an impressive range of up to 303km (CLTC). While the specifications for the India-specific model might vary, the battery pack will be sourced locally, following the trend set by the Comet EV.

The process of introducing the Baojun Yep to India will begin after MG India’s second round of investment, aimed at financing the second plant in Halol, Gujarat. The model is expected to make its Indian debut in 2025, with no direct rivals expected in the market at that time. However, it will likely compete with the likes of the Citroen eC3 in the country.

Regarding its launch name in India, the official moniker is yet to be announced. Nonetheless, the Baojun Yep is expected to be priced at a premium over the Comet EV. MG’s efforts in localizing production will contribute to its competitive pricing, making it an attractive proposition for environmentally-conscious Indian customers.
