Earlier in March when Mercedes-Benz India commenced the CKD assembly of the new W222 S500, we also reported that the German car maker will be launching the diesel variant S350 CDI soon. Now, according to a report, Mercedes-Benz India has commenced the bookings of the diesel variant of the S-Class and the upcoming GLA Compact SUV.
The S350 CDI variant of the S-Class will have similar equipment levels as the CKD S500, although it will have some bits missing from the top-of-the-line version. The Burmester sound system will come without 3D surround system and the Nappa leather upholstery will be replaced by plain leather. Also, unlike the two individual seats available on the S500, the S350 CDI will come with a bench at the rear. It will also miss out on the centre-armrest mounted tables for the rear passengers, chilling and heating cupholders. It will get a normal reversing camera instead of the 360-degree unit on the S 500. The Mercedes night-vision package also won’t be on offer on the S350 CDI.
The Mercedes-Benz S350 CDI is expected to priced at around INR 1.25 crore (estimated, ex-showroom), which is INR 11 lakh less than the CKD S500 variant. The diesel powered S-Class can be booked with a payment of INR 5 lakh and deliveries are expected to commence in end-June or early July.
The GLA Compact SUV, which was showcased at the Auto Expo 2014 this year, can be booked with a payment of INR 50,000. Mercedes-Benz India dealers are currently taking orders for only one variant of the GLA, the GLA 220 CDI diesel. The GLA 220 CDI will be powered by the same 2143cc diesel motor from the A-Class diesel. For the GLA, this motor churns out a healthy 167 bhp instead of the puny 107 horses it produces in the A-Class diesel. Deliveries for the GLA are expected to happen around September-October 2014.
