Ever since its launch in the month of October in 2015, Maruti’s offering in the premium hatchback segment, the Baleno, has been quite a popular car. Sold exclusively through Nexa, Maruti Suzuki’s retail channel dedicated to their premium offerings, India’s largest car manufacturer has sold more than 6 Lakh units of the Baleno. While achieving such sales figures itself is quite a remarkable feat, the brand tops it by doing so in a mere 44 months of time, a record-breaking achievement. The Baleno currently holds 27% of the market share in the A2+ segment. A good machine with decent equipment and with Maruti’s wide service network, no wonder the Baleno happens to be on the list of the top-10 best-selling cars in the country.
The Baleno is offered with three engine options, 2 petrol motors and one oil burner. The first option is a 4-cylinder, 1.2-litre naturally aspirated motor, which is tuned to generate 83 PS and 113 Nm of torque. The same engine can also be equipped with the smart hybrid system, which generates more power, around 90 PS while the torque figure remains unchanged. This engine is also offered with a CVT type automatic transmission. The other petrol motor is available only on the peppy RS variant. This three-pot 1-litre, turbocharged motor is tuned to generate 102 PS of peak power and 150 Nm of twist. The oil burner is a 1.3-litre unit, generating 75 PS power and 190 Nm of torque. The latter two engines are only offered with a 5-speed manual transmission.
