With the start of manufacturing of the chassis and other assemblies for the Electric Avatar of the Luna, Kinetic Engineering Ltd. (KEL), the company that invented the renowned moped “Luna,” has come full circle. The Luna was introduced by Kinetic Engineering Limited exactly 50 years ago today. At the time, it cost Rs. 2000, making it India’s most effective, economical, and practical mode of transportation. At the time, the Luna was a ground-breaking device that appealed to both men and women. Sales of the moped peaked at 2000 units per day, with a 95% market share.

All of the primary subassemblies for the E-Luna, including the main chassis, main stand, side stand, and swing arm, have been designed by KEL. The company has also put up a special production line with an initial monthly capacity of 5000 sets, exclusively for the helm. The E-Luna once again tries to tick all the boxes with its products, with a preference for load-carrying cars and a developing electric market segment.

Official Statement
Kinetic Engineering Limited’s MD, Ajinkya Firodia, remarked “It is amazing that the iconic Luna is coming back in its E-Avatar! We are very proud to be making all the major subassemblies of the same and be a part of this legacy! At its peak Luna was selling over 2000 no’s per day. I am sure it will do very well in its new avatar. We expect this business to add over Rs 30 crores annually over the next 2-3 years as the volumes of the E-Luna increase. This will also help KEL to boost its presence in the EV segment. KEL is emerging as a one-stop shop for all the major mechanical subassemblies for electric 2 & 3 wheelers, which have witnessed explosive growth over the past 12 months.”

These important and different parts will be welded using a brand-new line of over 30 pieces of welding equipment installed in a special shop inside the factory. In its sizable facility in Ahmednagar, all the assemblies will be completely completed and painted as required. KEL has also spent more than Rs 3 crores renovating its press & fabrication shops and paint facility in order to match the needs. At an estimated Rs 30 crores a year, the components for E-Luna will significantly increase KEL’s revenue starting in the first quarter of 2019.
