BYD reveals its second generation Blade Battery and FLASH charging tech with 5 minute charging

Electric cars are getting better each year, but charging time still worries many people. Now, BYD has taken a big step to solve that problem with its new battery and charging system.

The company has unveiled the second generation Blade Battery along with a new FLASH charging technology. Together, they promise charging speeds that are much closer to refuelling a petrol car.

With the new battery, an EV can charge from 10 percent to 70 percent in only 5 minutes. A charge from 10 per cent to 97 per cent takes about 9 minutes. Cold weather is another area where EV batteries usually struggle. The new battery works much better in extreme conditions, says BYD.

  • At –30°C, charging from 20 percent to 97 percent only takes three minutes longer than normal temperature.
  • This helps reduce one of the biggest winter problems for EV users.

The battery took six years to develop. It also improves energy density by about 5 percent, while still being able to charge very fast.

When used in the Denza Z9GT, the battery can deliver a claimed range of up to 1,036 km thanks to a lighter vehicle structure.

Safety is also a big focus.

  • A Lithium Ion High Speed Channel to control the heat during charging
  • Full spectrum intelligent thermal management system maintains battery temperatures
  • The battery has passed safety tests going beyond China’s national standards

To support these speeds, BYD has also created a powerful new charger.

  • FLASH charger output up to 1,500kW from a single connector
  • Energy storage systems help to avoid heavy load on the local electricity grid

The charging experience itself has also been redesigned.

  • A T shaped pulley charger allows the cable to easily move around the car
  • The zero gravity design makes the connector easier to pick up and handle

Infrastructure is also part of the plan.

BYD plans to have built 20,000 FLASH charging stations throughout China by the end of 2026, with global expansion to follow.

This project also connects with the company’s long running sustainability vision called the ‘Three Green Dreams’, which focuses on solar energy, battery storage and EV charging working together.

The new battery and charging system is a sign of how quickly electric mobility is advancing. Faster charging, long range and better safety could make EV ownership more accessible to many more people.
