New Audi A Unveiled

Audi Issues Voluntary Recall For 850,000 Vehicles To Reduce Emissions

Audi has initiated a voluntary recall for its six and eight cylinder Euro 5 & Euro 6 diesel engines – a move that is said to affect over 850,000 cars across the world. Audi says that this move will allow them to improve their tailpipe emissions to bump them even below the legal requirements.

Ingolstadt said that the voluntary service action would involve a minor software upgrade. The recall will be conducted in close consultation with the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). The company has agreed to bear all the costs for the recall which means that the customers won’t have to pay a penny for this.

The service action also includes Porsche and Volkswagen vehicles fitted with the V6 or V8 TDI engines. In its press release, Audi expressed hope that such moves can help avoid a complete ban on diesel engines – a move that is being considered by a large number of nations across the world.

The brand said that diesel engines were instrumental in meeting the low carbon emissions goals set forth by the European Union. Audi claims to have been undertaking rigorous testing across its engine and transmission range.

As a result, they, along with the Ministry of Transport and the KBA have formulated a detailed plan to reduce emissions which include similar voluntary recalls. Audi noted that the investigations by the German authorities were still not over and that any further irregularities would be dealt with by similar service issues.

This package rides on the increasing pressure by the German authorities on all indigenous carmakers to reduce emissions. Early this month, a Reuters report had suggested that the KBA had been strong-arming the car makers to announce drastic pollution reducing measures before the country heads into elections in September. Last week, Daimler too had announced a recall of 3 Million cars across the continent.
