If a new proposal is passed in the parliament, 16-year-old may soon be able to ride a gearless scooter in India legally. The scooters, however, should have a displacement of below 100cc which does not give you a lot of choices and we feel the displacement should be raised to 110cc.

According to a PTI report, the proposal was recommended by a group of ministers who made a number of suggestions, said Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Pon Radhakrishnan to the Lok Sabha. Moreover, Radhakrishnan also added that the government plans to fit speed limiting devices on certain categories of transport vehicles having maximum preset speed of 80 km per hour.

Radhakrishnan told PTI, “There is a proposal to allow licence after 16 years of age for gearless scooters below 100 cc. Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued notification…wherein speed limiting device or speed limiting functions are mandated to be fitted in certain categories of transport vehicles having maximum preset speed of 80 km per hour conforming to the standard.”

The Ministry has constituted a panel to to prepare a draft for stricter road safety bill. This panel will comprise of Transport Ministers from states, headed by Rajasthan Transport Minister Yunoos Khan.

Before taking such a step the govt shpuld plan to upgrade the system of acquiring a licence to a whole new level. People do not respect the laws of traffic because they do not know much about them. There are countries who have well setup of licence acquiring system that takes more than a year to get. In india we get it in around 7 months!!
In some cases where corruption is involved it is less . Govt should seriously look into this matter than going for licence for kids because many accidents take place in india which accounts for loss in GDP growth of india. Many of the accidents happen due to neglecting and dispbeying the laws of traffic.

  2. This is certainly a good decision our govt. has taken in ages! This will allow many of them to ride legally! ✌

  3. The only options available are from TVS’ stable which includes TVS XL super and Scooty pep+

  4. YEs i think the displacement must be below 110 cc and the speed limit around 50-60kmph
