Introduction
In a world increasingly driven by SUVs and crossovers, India’s sedan segment continues to lose ground. April 2025’s car sales data makes that crystal clear. Sedans recorded a month-on-month (MoM) drop of 9% and a slight year-on-year (YoY) dip of 1.8%, highlighting the challenges this traditional body style faces in the current market landscape.
However, one name continues to defy the odds — the Maruti Suzuki Dzire. Not only did it outsell every other sedan by a massive margin, it also saw growth on both MoM and YoY bases. Here’s a detailed breakdown of how each mass-market sedan performed.

Segment-wise Analysis
Sub-4m Sedans–
- Maruti Dzire:
India’s bestselling sedan continues its reign with 16,996 units sold in April. Dzire’s massive 58% market share in the sedan space underlines its unmatched dominance. It was the only sedan to post positive growth on both monthly and yearly scales. Its reliability, fuel economy, and wide network support continue to win customer trust.

- Hyundai Aura:
Despite holding onto the second spot, the Aura witnessed a steep 17% drop in MoM sales. Its YoY dip stood at 7%, indicating waning demand. The Xcent fleet version included in these numbers couldn’t soften the blow.

- Honda Amaze:
A rare YoY growth story here — sales went up 12% compared to last year. However, a massive 44% MoM decline shows that this gain might be short-lived unless a refreshed model arrives soon.

- Tata Tigor (ICE + EV):
With just 1,296 units sold, the Tigor recorded one of the sharpest YoY declines at 40%. Even MoM, it fell 12%. The EV version likely forms a small part of this number and clearly hasn’t helped offset the overall loss.

C-Segment Sedans–
- Volkswagen Virtus:
Virtus stood out with a 36% YoY surge, selling 1,605 units. Despite an 18% MoM drop, it was the only C-segment sedan with notable yearly growth. Its modern design and turbocharged engine options seem to appeal to younger buyers.

- Skoda Slavia:
Its Czech sibling Slavia couldn’t replicate Virtus’s success. Sales dropped to 1,048 units — a 16% fall from last year and 12% down from last month. Although both these sibling sedans are currently facing sales pressure, there’s hope on the horizon—with facelifts expected either by the end of this year or in the first half of 2026, which could help them bounce back in the segment.

- Hyundai Verna:
Once a segment leader, Verna continues its fall from grace with just 1,005 units sold. That’s a 26% MoM and a 36% YoY decline. Despite the new-generation model’s bold looks, the market seems to prefer SUVs in this price bracket.

- Honda City:
April 2025 was a tough month for the Honda City. Sales barely crossed 500 units, resulting in a sharp 65% decline — the steepest drop among all sedans on the list. Clearly, the City is facing some serious challenges right now

Conclusion – What These Numbers Say About Sedans in 2025
April 2025 proves that India’s love for sedans is fading, but not entirely extinguished. While most models suffered from declining numbers, the Maruti Dzire remains the gold standard, accounting for over half the segment’s volume.
Rivals like the VW Virtus and Honda Amaze show glimmers of hope with YoY growth, but the broader picture indicates that SUVs continue to dominate the buyer’s mindspace. For sedans to thrive again, manufacturers will need to focus on hybridization, stronger brand differentiation, and richer feature offerings.
