Maruti Suzuki India Employees Stay Away From Work at Manesar plant

Troubles at Maruti Suzuki do not seem to cease. Soon after the nation’s largest car maker resumed operations at the Manesar plant, which had remained closed since July 18th, the management at MSIL has observed hostility from trade unions. This is owing to the car maker’s decision to dismiss more than 500 workers which are supposed to be directly involved in the violence that took place last month. The condition is so bad that only 84 workers reported for work yesterday. The remaining employees stayed away from work as they fear of a backlash from the workers that have been laid off.

Trade Union leaders are demanding immediate recall of the 546 workers that have been dismissed. These leaders also want the manufacturer to restore the jobs of the 1869 contract workers that have been dismissed. Along with the demand of recall of dismissed workers, the Trade Unions also want the withdrawal of police forces that have been positioned at the Manesar campus. Maruti Suzuki India Ltd has been in talks with Gujarat govt. for investment of INR 4000 crores to install a new manufacturing plant. Osamu Suzuki, Head, Suzuki Motors, R C Bhargava, Chairman, MSI and Shinzo Nakanishi, CEO, MSI met Narendra Modi, Chief Minister, Gujarat regarding this and it has also been decided that MSI will soon set up a new skill development center in Gujarat.
