After a long period of anticipation, several spy shots, and plenty of buzz around the new SUV, Hyundai has officially confirmed the name of its upcoming India model. It will be called the Hyundai Bayon. The company has revealed the name ahead of the SUV’s expected launch during the festive season.
Hyundai Bayon: What Does The Name Mean?
The name Bayon comes from Bayonne, a city in the French Basque Country. Hyundai says the name reflects the city’s distinctive character and dynamic energy.
The company has also used the Bayon nameplate in international markets. However, the India-spec SUV will be a completely different product developed with local requirements in mind.
Hyundai Motor India MD and CEO Tarun Garg said the Bayon represents a new approach to intelligent and intuitive mobility. The company has not shared the full technical details yet, and more information is expected soon.
Spy Shots Have Revealed Several Details
The Hyundai Bayon has been seen testing on Indian roads multiple times. These test cars have given a fairly good picture of the SUV’s overall size and design.
The SUV gets a crossover-like shape with a fairly flat roof, prominent roof rails, and flared wheel arches. The front appears to feature a sharp split-light setup with a wide LED light signature placed higher up.
At the rear, the test cars have shown a slim horizontal lighting element and a sleek roof spoiler.

Cabin And Features
The cabin layout has also been spotted during road testing. Hyundai appears to be giving the Bayon a modern dashboard with two large digital screens placed close together.
A new steering wheel featuring Hyundai’s modern four-dot design has also been seen. Depending on the variant, the SUV could get several high-tech convenience and safety features.

Petrol And CNG Engines Expected
Hyundai has not confirmed the engine range yet. However, reports suggest that the Bayon could use the company’s proven 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine.
The engine currently makes around 115hp in other Hyundai applications. A 6-speed manual and a smooth CVT automatic are expected to be offered.
A factory-fitted CNG version is also highly likely. If launched, the Bayon could become Hyundai’s first model measuring above four metres to receive a green CNG powertrain.
Position In Hyundai’s SUV Range
The Bayon is expected to sit neatly between the Venue and the Creta in Hyundai’s India line-up. Reports suggest that it could measure around 4.2 metres in length.
The expected price range is around ₹9 lakh to ₹14 lakh, ex-showroom, although Hyundai has not announced final pricing yet.
