Renault Austral Spotted Testing in India: A Premium SUV Challenger?

The French automaker Renault has sparked speculation by test-driving its all-new Austral SUV on Indian roads. This  SUV, if launched, could pose a serious threat to established players like the MG Hector and Mahindra XUV700.

A Global SUV with Indian Potential

The Austral, unveiled in 2022 as a replacement for the Kadjar SUV, is built on the new third-generation CMF-CD platform co-developed by Mitsubishi and Nissan. This platform could offer a strong foundation for the Indian market.

Renault-Nissan Alliance Gears Up

The Renault-Nissan alliance has announced a significant investment aimed at an aggressive product launch strategy in the coming years. This plan includes not only the upcoming Duster and Terrano but also an expansion into the premium vehicle segment. The Austral, with its potential features and capabilities, could be a perfect fit to compete with the likes of the Tata Harrier, Mahindra XUV700, and MG Hector.

A Hybrid Option for the Premium Segment?

Interestingly, the Renault Austral spotted in India was the Austral E-Tech variant. This hybrid option combines a 1.3L turbo petrol engine with a 400V hybrid system and a 2 kWh battery, delivering a total system output of 200 bhp. This powertrain could be a game-changer for the alliance in the premium segment, and the test mule’s presence suggests Renault might be evaluating its potential in the Indian market.

Will the Austral Make it to India?

While the sighting of the Austral is exciting, Renault has a history of testing vehicles that never reach Indian shores. Only time will tell if the Austral will become a reality for Indian car buyers. However, its potential to rival established SUVs and the alliance’s focus on premium offerings make it a development worth watching closely.
