Scooters have proven to be convenient trundling tools compared to motorcycles in the present day traffic scenario with the rising demand reflecting on the sales charts of this category of two-wheelers. With most of the manufacturers offering variants to differentiate between numerous models in their own lineup, most of the scooters end up looking clones of each other. So, the first time I saw the Fascino, I mistook it for a new model from an Italian manufacturer until my eyes met the Y badge. The curve laden design certainly didn’t look like a part of the regular scooter population on the streets today. The Yamaha Fascino, thus, for a change is an attractive addition to this bustling segment, so much so that personally I was extremely eager to ride it simply for its styling. I took the gorgeous little scoot on an day long outing to conclude if it had the go to match the show on offer. Here I have jotted down my views in this detailed Yamaha Fascino review.

STYLING & FEATURES

Yamaha Fascino front view

The new Yamaha Fascino unarguably looks gorgeous. The TV commercials showcase the Fascino as a female oriented offering, and quite rightly so, as those beautifully curvy silhouette presents itself to the gentler, fairer sex than being the ride of choice of a burly moustached hunk. The sweeping curves on the apron and the panel wraps around the headlight furnish it with an elegant, suave look.

Yamaha Fascino rear

The rear sweeps in the utmost curvaceous fashion with chrome accents on the side panels and the 3D emblem raising the allure for the Yamaha Fascino. The rear is refreshingly different from the relatively analogous look found on most scooters and testifies that designers of the Fascino weren’t depleted of motivation by the time they made it to the tail. The paint, chrome accents and the matt grey panels merge well offering a contrast that looks appealing to the viewers eye. We do have the complete details covered in our features photo tour:

• Retro styled headlight gives the Fascino a bold yet classy touch. It could probably have done even better with a chrome bezel though.

• The retro theme is carried over to the huge dials on the dashboard and the enlarged proportions render the Fascino with a big scoot feel.

• The footboard offers decent longitudinal space for moving your feet back and forth, but feels narrow in width. Place a bag and the acreage takes a beating.

• Chrome garnishes to the mirrors, upper lip of the grille, side panels and the tail lamp add bling and glamour to the Fascino

• One of the most comfortable seats in the business for both the rider and pillion

• The Fascino boasts of laudable build quality and the same is reflected in the switchgear

• The exhaust looks a bit disproportionate with the heat shield protruding beyond the unit.

• Telescopic front suspension and a single swinging rear shock feel slightly stiff during solo ride but pliant while riding two up

• A static bag hook has been provided below the seat.

• Single cubby facilitates for storing scarf, a small purse or a water bottle

• The underseat storage apart from swallowing the usual grocery purchases can accommodate a medium size helmet. Place a large size helmet inside and the seat won’t lock.

• With a few other scooters offering the refueling lid on the exterior, we wished the same on the Fascino too, but alas.

• 90/100-10 MRF Zappers at both ends offer decent amounts of grip under hard riding and braking

PERFORMANCE, HANDLING, BRAKING & RIDING COMFORT

Yamaha Fascino engine

The Yamaha Fascino shares the engine with the Alpha and Ray Series. The four stroke air cooled 113cc single cylinder motor produces peak power of 7.1 ps @ 7500 rpm and max torque of 8.1 nm @ 5000 rpm and feels refined as one could expect from a Japanese manufacturer. During our test runs, the Fascino was pushed to its limit riding two up on a hot afternoon, but the engine maintained composure under stress and showed no signs of fatigue or gruffness. It doesn’t feel quick off the block as the competition, but maintains a healthy punch throughout the rev range before running out of breath as the needle starts to close on the 80 kph mark.

Yamaha Fascino cornering

The Fascino exhibits handling traits similar to the Yamaha Ray. Despite larger proportions – it retains the agility and flicks around in traffic with minimal effort. It holds up well in the straight line at high speeds and feels extremely predictable going around corners. One could just keep the throttle pinned at max and dive in and out of corners without a hint of nervousness. The brakes too feel similar to the Yamaha Ray and impart adequate bite to shed speed or squeeze to a quick halt. The 10 incher MRF Zappers at both ends offer decent bite into the tarmac during spirited riding and hard braking.

Yamaha Fascino riding position

The Yamaha Fascino scores merit on riding comfort with one of the best seats in business for both rider and pillion. Though the suspension feels a tad stiff for single riding but does well while riding two up. Going over speed breakers doesn’t slap your bottom and the Fascino did a stellar job when taken to the broken trail.

CONCLUSION

Yamaha Fascino side view

The biggest USP of the Yamaha Fascino is its design. The neo-retro styling makes the Fascino a desirable scooter and stands out from the current crop of autoscoots in the market. A refined motor at the helm with adequate performance on offer alongwith taut handling and braking characteristics makes the Yamaha Fascino a formidable offering from the Japanese manufacturer. Priced at INR 53,000/- (ex-showroom, Delhi) it fills the void for the style conscious commuter who wants the best of both worlds.
