Volkswagen Scirocco EV Revival Possible

Volkswagen is reportedly considering a revival of its iconic sports coupe, the Scirocco, but this time with a cutting-edge twist as an electric vehicle (EV).

The speculations hint at a potential return with a dual-motor, four-wheel-drive R flagship, offering a blend of 1970s-inspired styling and modern electric prowess.

Scirocco’s Electric Revival

The revival of the Scirocco is part of a broader sports car project currently under discussion at Volkswagen. According to insiders, this project also includes the development of a fourth-generation Porsche Boxster/Cayman, a production version of the Cupra Dark Rebel coupe concept, and a fourth-generation Audi TT.

The Scirocco, with its rich history, could make a grand re-entry into the automotive scene as soon as 2028, pending approval by Volkswagen’s CEO, Thomas Schafer.

Platform and Powertrain

The Scirocco is anticipated to be based on a modified version of the PPE platform, initially developed for the new Boxster/Cayman.

This platform, exclusively tailored for electric power, is designed to accommodate varying wheelbase lengths and track widths, offering flexibility in single-motor, rear-wheel-drive, and dual-motor, four-wheel-drive configurations.

The unique E-Core platform, labeled by Porsche, echoes the mid-engined layout of previous Boxsters, showcasing low door sills and floor height, crucial for maintaining a sporty silhouette.

This platform’s design, with the battery cleverly placed within the center tunnel and behind the cabin, draws inspiration from the successful J1 platform used by the Porsche Taycan and the Audi e-tron GT.

Performance Expectations

Enthusiasts can anticipate a thrilling performance from the Scirocco EV. With an estimated 300bhp in its single-motor form and the potential to exceed 400bhp in the dual-motor variant, the Scirocco is poised to be a worthy successor to its predecessor, the Scirocco R, which boasted a turbo four-pot engine from 2009 to 2017.

Production Plans and Legacy

The decision on the Scirocco’s production site is yet to be finalized, but one possibility is the former Karmann factory in Osnabruck, Germany – the birthplace of the original Scirocco.

This potential revival aligns with Volkswagen Group’s efforts, led by chairman Oliver Blume, to enhance economies of scale for new volume-selling models.

Our Take

As the ever evolving Indian Automotive scene is seeing a paradigm shift towards electrification, the Scirocco would be a great proposition for Volkswagen to bring to India for the enthusiasts who crave a EV sportscars.
