Upcoming Tata Q501 SUV caught testing in Land Rover Discovery’s clothes

Tata Motors looks all set to revisit their SUV roots with some seriously modern products. First in line will be the Nexon, which will look to cement Tata’s position in the Compact SUV segment with its very today styling and equipment. In cooperation with Land Rover, an all-new platform, the Tata Q501 is also being developed, where a test example was caught going through its rounds behind the Hexa, in Pune. Since development is still in the early stages, the entirely new platform is being tested under a Land Rover Discovery Sport’s bodyshell.

This mint fresh platform will underpin Tata’s next generation utility vehicles and is heavily based on the Discovery’s underpinnings. If the Nexon drops any clues, expect the next-gen Tata SUV’s styling to be thoroughly modern and striking. A 7-seater variant is also said to be in the works and has been aptly codenamed Q502. Powering these next gen Tata SUVs won’t be any of the in-house oil burners though. Instead, the Q501 could be propelled by a 2.0-litre Multijet II motor that also powers the brand new Jeep Compass. Good for an output of 172 PS and 350 Nm under the baby Jeep’s hood, Tata is said to have already earmarked 70,000 units of these new motors for their future SUV onslaught.

Like the Hexa and the Nexon, expect the Tata Q501 to come with a more advanced terrain management system, a well-appointed cabin with most modern features, and a kick ass sound system if the unit in all their modern cars is an indication. Apparently, an all-new Mahindra Scorpio is also said to be in its initial development phase and is being designed by Mahindra’s U.S. based research centre. Engineering duties for this model will be handed over to the Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai, and it is being conceived with an aim to make it a global SUV that will compete in developed markets like the United States, Australia and Europe.
