The Z Series dated way back to 1989, when the left hand driven Z1 was launched only to be dropped off the production line in 1991 due to dwindling sales despite the initial sales rush. The Z series saw revival when BMW launched the Z3 in 1995 and it was later that the car received most of the limelight when Pierce Brosnan drove a blue Z3 in the James Bond Movie “Golden Eye” firing stinger missiles at the enemy camp (we wish if it really came with one).
The Z3 was discontinued and followed by the Z4 in 2002. At present the 2014 BMW Z4 is available in three trims i.e. the sDrive28i in a 4 cylinder 2.0 litre twinturbo with 240 bhp, a 3.0 litre inline 6 cylinder sDrive35i with 300 bhp and the 335 bhp straight-six sDrive35is with a seven speed dual clutch transmission and other enhancements on the specifications chart.
The sexy (it so deserves to be called) and swoopy roadster has more than often been pitted against the Porsche Boxster, but we’d say the BMW Z4 is a more direct rival to its other German counterpart- the Mercedes Benz SLK.
