Hyundai Verna Achieves 5-Star Safety Rating in Global NCAP Test

In a significant milestone for Hyundai in India, the new Hyundai Verna has secured a prestigious 5-star safety rating in the Global NCAP test, making it the first Hyundai model in India to achieve this top-tier safety certification. The Verna, designed and manufactured in India for the Indian market, comes equipped with a range of safety features, including 6 airbags, ESC, rear ISOFIX mounts, and seat belt reminders for all seats as standard.

This achievement is particularly noteworthy as the Verna is one of the last vehicles to be assessed under the Safer Cars For India program. Starting from October 1, Bharat NCAP will take over the responsibility of testing cars sold in the Indian market.

Hyundai Verna Detailed Safety Assessment:

  • Adult Occupant Protection: The Verna scored an impressive 28.18 points out of 34, excelling in head and neck protection for both driver and passenger in frontal impact tests. However, the bodyshell was rated as unstable under further loadings. Chest protection for the driver was considered marginal, while passenger chest protection received a good rating. Knees and footwell area protection were deemed marginal and unstable, respectively.
  • Side Impact and Pole Impact: The Verna demonstrated good protection for the front passenger’s head, pelvis, and abdomen in side impact tests, with adequate chest protection. In the side pole impact test, the Verna received an ‘OK’ rating, providing good protection for the passenger’s head and pelvis, marginal protection for the chest, and adequate protection for the abdomen.
  • ESC Performance: The Verna’s Electronic Stability Control (ESC) performance met Global NCAP’s requirements, and it also complied with UN 127 and GTR9 pedestrian protection norms.

Child Occupant Protection: The Verna excelled in child occupant protection, scoring 42 out of 49 points. This included full points for Child Restraint System (CRS) installation and a perfect dynamic score. The CRS effectively protected an 18-month-old and a 3-year-old child in rearward-facing seats during frontal crash tests.

It’s worth noting that the Verna’s rivals in the midsize sedan segment, namely the Slavia and Virtus, also achieved 5-star ratings. However, the latter two vehicles showed slightly better performance in adult occupant protection and featured stable body shells.

In summary, the Hyundai Verna’s 5-star safety rating underscores Hyundai’s commitment to delivering top-notch safety standards in the Indian automotive market.
