Honda is currently working on its new plans to cater to even wider audience base and grab a market share of the entry-level hatchback segment which is currently dominated by Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai. A recent report from news agency Reuters suggests that Honda Motor Company is planning to develop a smaller car, specific to the Indian market that would be designed and built locally in the sub-continent.

Hironao Ito, Senior Vice President of Honda Genbetsu India, the R&D arm said that the platform and engine will be developed with the support of parent company. However, the exteriors and interiors may be developed in India. Moreover, this new model will also be exported to international markets from India. The new entry level model however, according to the report, would be placed above the likes of Maruti’s Alto.

Speaking to the news agency, Ito said, “Some specific model for India is necessary. The market has also shifted to slightly bigger cars. Our strong point is that higher segment, and market growth is matching that.”

While Ito did not reveal any specific time frame for the launch, IHS Automotive associate director Puneet Gupta said that this small car may start rolling off the assembly line by 2020. Gupta also added that the output is expected to hover around 150,000 units a year, 50,000 of which will be exported.

Honda’s current entry level model, the Brio hatchback currently retails at Rs 4.25 – 6.83 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The new small hatchback will be placed below the Brio but, as aforementioned, will be placed above the Maruti Suzuki’s Alto and Wagon R. We really do not want to pin-point any price bracket as we are talking about a product that will be launched about half a decade ahead in the future.
