A BMW i8 was totalled after a mishap involving a cement mixer truck. The impact between the two was such that the front end of the sports car was mangled beyond recognition. The freak incident that occurred in Newport Beach, California luckily didn’t witness any loss of life. Reports suggested that the 2 occupants of the car escaped without any major injuries.
According to the authorities, the incident occurred in the morning around 8:40 A.M. when a truck carrying gardening material collided with a cement truck, after which it tipped over on an offramp, crushing the hybrid sports car.
The local fire authority was quoted saying to a newspaper that the occupants, a 40 year old man and a 49 year old woman were sent to a hospital after reportedly receiving moderate injuries. Another 50 year old man, possibly the driver of the truck, was brought to the hospital in a critical condition but his status was later said to have improved. Observing the impact of the mishap on the i8, the sports car’s safety net held up pretty well.

The BMW i8 is powered by two engines – a 131 hp electric motor clubbed with a BMW TwinPower Turbo 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol that produces 232 hp. Together, the two units deliver a total of 362 hp. The i8 sprints from naught to 100 kph in just 4.4 seconds. On battery power alone, the i8 can achieve top speed of 120 km/h with a maximum range of 35 km.
