BMW 5 Series Sold Out in India

In a surprising turn of events, the current-generation BMW 5 Series has Sold Out in India, next generation to launch in Q3 of 2024

Anticipation for the Next-Gen

The highly anticipated eighth-gen BMW 5 Series, set to launch in India in the third quarter of 2024. It will offer not one, not two, but three powertrain options, including an all-electric i5 variant right from the start.

Sales Snapshot and Market Dynamics

The outgoing 5 Series faced stiff competition from rivals, namely the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the Audi A6. Sales figures reveal that the E-Class outpaced the 5 Series by more than three times in FY2023, selling 3,159 units compared to the 5 Series’ 1,013 units. A similar trend continued in FY2022, indicating a consistent dominance by the E-Class.

Eighth-Gen Arrival and Line-Up Details

The eighth-generation 5 Series made its global debut in May of this year, gearing up for an Indian launch precisely when it’s needed most. Slated for Q3 2024, it will coincide with the launch of the next-gen Mercedes-Benz E-Class, intensifying the competition. Until then, buyers in this segment still have the option of the 6-Series GT, available in both petrol and diesel variants.

The new 5 Series is set to offer a comprehensive model line-up, featuring petrol, diesel, and electric powertrains. The 520i and 520d variants are expected to be powered by turbocharged 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engines. While plug-in hybrid powertrains are available overseas, their introduction to the Indian market remains uncertain.

Unveiling the i5 Electric Variant

The electric i5 variant comes in two iterations – the rear-wheel-drive eDrive40 and the four-wheel-drive M60 xDrive. The former boasts 340hp and 430Nm, with a claimed range of up to 582km on the WLTP cycle. The latter, a powerhouse with 601hp and 820Nm, offers a range of up to 516km on the same cycle. However, which of these will be available in India remains to be seen.

Rivals and Market Dynamics

Upon its launch, the next-gen 5 Series will resume its rivalry with the Mercedes E-Class, Audi A6, and Lexus ES 300h in India. Notably, the ES 300h stands out as the sole contender with a hybrid powertrain in its class. The introduction of the all-electric BMW i5 also sets the stage for a showdown with the Mercedes-Benz EQE sedan, although the latter’s launch is expected much later than its combustion counterparts.
