2017 Jeep Wrangler to hang on to its solid axles

2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition

Independent multi-link, McPherson struts, Magnetorheological dampers etc., are some of the terminologies that might never be associated with an SUV like the Jeep Wrangler. Those modern and light-weight solutions to suspension systems might well be considered blasphemy, especially for an historic product such as the Wrangler. According to Automotive News, the next-gen Jeep Wrangler, which is bound to show its face to the world in 2017, will carry forward its solid axle setup. However, it’s been said that the solid axles will see some upgrades to improve the car’s overall ride quality and also, increase the efficiency of this big bruiser.

The Wrangler in its natural habitat.

The move to more sophisticated suspension setups could have helped Jeep reduce the bulk of the upcoming Wrangler by a fair bit, but the Fiat-Chrysler owned carmaker knows what’s best for its timeless champ of the wild. One of the profiteers of this move, is the industry of aftermarket equipments that sell tonnes of lifting (suspension lifts) equipments for Jeep Wranglers. Most of these aftermarket fitments, conclude with the SUV having a considerably raised ground clearance and wearing much bigger rubber than the standard car. Jeep’s choice of sticking with the traditional solid axle setup, means it’s far easier for these companies to jack up the Wrangler, according to the individual customer’s need. The same procedure is far more complicated in cars that employ independent suspension systems.

Jeep hasn’t admitted to have finalised the end design for the 2017 Wrangler, but it is said that the SUV will have an aluminium body, complimented further by more efficient turbocharged engines and would use an 8-speed automatic transmission (by ZF, maybe?) Also, to aid in the car’s aerodynamics, the windshield of the 2017 Jeep Wrangler, will incorporate a steep rake to its design. We aren’t quite sure as to how much of an affect this proposed raked windshield will have on this, rather boxy SUV. Anyway, let us know what you think about the Jeep Wrangler in the comments section, below.
