The Mahindra XUV500 is one of India's most popular premium SUVs and has evolved into a great all-round product since it was first launched. Available in many variants and with engine-gearbox choices, it offers something for everyone.
The Mahindra XUV500 is a smart looking SUV and its latest avatar, its Cheetah-inspired design has evolved even further. This particular Mahindra is full of interesting design details and elements like thick wheel arches, aggressively creases on the bonnet, and a new front grille which gets some more flash with jewel-like inserts. Overall, it's a busy design but cuts an interesting picture as a whole.
In terms of kit, the Mahindra XUV500 gets projector headlamps with LED DRLs, 17-inch, diamond-cut alloy wheels, electronically adjustable wing mirrors with integrated side indicators and blacked-out A, B and C pillar to enhance to the premium quotient of the car. The XUV500 weighs 2510 kg and has a turning radius of 5.6m. The picture gets completed with a fresh looking rear which features new split tail lights, a roof-mounted spoiler with an integrated stop light, twin exhaust and a stylish tailgate applique.
The Mahindra XUV500 looks premium on the inside. It comes equipped with creature comforts like a cool box, 6-way power adjustable driver seat, ice-blue lounge lighting, piano black centre console and illuminated scuff plates. The cabin of the car feels roomy and it can effortlessly accommodate 7-passengers at a time, although the third row is good only for short to medium journeys.
The premium quilted tan leather seats provide a sufficient amount of side and under-thigh support. Storage is not an issue in the XUV500 as it offers an ample amount of storage spaces which includes a glovebox, cup holders, bottle holders and side pockets. However, boot space at 96 litres is poor and only increases when either one or both of the flat-foldable rear rows go down. The centre console gets a 7" touchscreen infotainment system is tuned by Arkamys and is compatible with Android Auto, Connected apps and Eco-sense technology. Some variants also offer CarPlay compatibility.
Lower-spec variants get a 6" monochrome display for infotainment with USB and Bluetooth audio. The soft touch leather on the dashboard and centre armrest feels quite upmarket. The instrument console gets an analogue speedometer with digital odometer, fuel gauge and gear shift indicator on the left and it also comes equipped with an analogue tachometer on the right with digital heat indicator. An electric sunroof with an anti-pinch feature is offered on higher-spec trims.
The XUV500 is built on Mahindra's monocoque body frame which can easily absorb heavy shocks. The SUV comes equipped with safety features like as many as 6 airbags, ABS and EBD, ESP with rollover mitigation, automatic headlamp, rain sensing wipers, hill road assist, hill descent control, disc brakes on all wheels, reverse parking camera, and reverse parking sensors.
The Mahindra XUV 500 continues to get power from the same 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine that produces 157ps of power at 3750 rpm and 360 Nm of peak torque at 2800 rpm, the engine comes connected to a 6-speed manual and automatic gearboxes. An AWD system is also offered on the W11(O) trim level and is available with both auto and manual gearboxes.
Mahindra has also introduced the newly-developed 2.2-litre mHawk petrol unit under the XUV500's hood. It is good at churning out the respective powering output of 141ps at 4500 rpm and 320 Nm at 3000 rpm. The petrol unit is paired with a 6-speed automatic gearbox only. The petrol variant is only available with the 2WD drive train. The 2018 Mahindra XUV500 can return a mileage of up to 14.0 km/l (diesel, manual & automatic) and 13.85 km/l when powered by the petrol engine.
