Jeep Wrangler 2018 will be lighter, more fuel efficient

How would you feel if we say that Jeep is planning to make its gas guzzling Wrangler more eco-friendly? Don’t worry, they are not reducing the power.

In an interview to Edmunds.com, Jeep Head Mike Manley said that the automaker is finding innovative ways to reduce weight to boost fuel economy for the 2018 model in order to meet stiff MPG regulations without compromising the power.

Chrysler Group is in the process of developing the redesigned Wrangler, whose prime focus will be on fuel economy, weight reduction and capability, he said.

Expressing his views on the 2018 Wrangler, Manley said, “We must be innovative in terms of what we do for the next Wrangler because clearly we have to make sure that vehicle survives into the future. It is vital for the brand.”

Manley further added, “You will see continued improvements in powertrains. It is a major focus for us. We have a lot of experts working on this project.”

The current 2014 Jeep Wrangler 4WD is powered by a 3.6-litre V6 engine and gives 17 miles to a gallon in city driving and 21 miles to a gallon on the highway, according to the EPA.

Manley said that the 2018 Jeep Wrangler will be a new platform altogether unlike the Chrysler 200, Dodge Dart and Jeep Cherokee that were developed on a Fiat platform.

Speaking about the new platform being developed for 2018 Jeep Wrangler, Manley said, “There will be no compromises,” he said. “It has to be its own architecture. When I think about the next-generation Wrangler at this moment in time, we are the benchmark, so I want to push the benchmark even further.”

  1. Suvil,

I really like the looks of the 2018 Jeep Wrangler and I am glad to hear they are focusing on improving fuel efficiency without compromising performance. I would love to see at least 21mpg city and 26mpg hwy if not better. I hope to keep seeing those four door models being produced.
