BMW will add an AWD xDrive version to the M2

BMW is preparing to introduce a new xDrive all wheel drive version of the M2 Coupe. Right now, the M2 is the only full M car that sends power only to the rear wheels. The M3, M4 and M5 already use AWD as standard. Soon, the smallest M car will join them.

The new M2 xDrive will use the same 3.0 litre twin turbo straight six petrol engine. However, power is expected to increase by about 50hp. That means output could be increased to around 530hp, similar to the latest M2 CS. The additional power will help balance the added weight of the AWD hardware. Kerb weight could be close to 1800kg.

Performance should also improve.

Expected highlights

  • 530hp possible output
  • 0 to 100 kmph time probably less than 4 seconds
  • Rear biased AWD system
  • Selectable drive modes
  • Pure rear drive mode option
  • Automatic gearbox 8 speed only

Unlike the rear wheel drive M2, the AWD version will not get a manual gearbox. It will be offered only with 8 speed automatic transmission.

Production is scheduled to start at BMW’s San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico around mid 2026. A worldwide launch is expected in the second half of the year. Since the standard M2 is already sold in India at a little more than Rs 1.03 crore, the xDrive version could also come here at a slightly higher price.

The M2 is about to become faster and more secure under hard acceleration. For buyers who want extra grip and don’t want to lose the M character, this might be the one to wait for.
