You read it first on Motoroids! One of our close friends, who works for the Indian subsidiary of Bosch, told us few minutes back that his employer just got an order for supplying fuel injectors for the oil burner of upcoming Alto 800 diesel variant. He further informed us that Maruti plans to launch the Alto 800 diesel sometime in 2014.
It may be noted that the new Maruti Suzuki Alto 800, which replaced the last gen Alto in India, has literally taken the entry level hatchback segment by storm. It has not just carried forward the legacy enjoyed by the Alto brand name but has also been successful in carving out a distinct identity for itself.
The new Alto 800, despite the insipid exterior styling, is flying off the shelves and has been giving sleepless nights to rivals. The only direct rival that the diesel variant of Alto 800 would face is the soon to be launched Tata Nano diesel. The Tata Nano hasn’t really gone down too well with the Indian car buying lot but Tata is betting big on the upcoming diesel variant which, in all probability, will offer stellar fuel economy. Powering the Tata Nano diesel would be a two cylinder, 800 cc diesel engine with aruond 40PS of max power.
The upcoming Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 diesel too will be a new 800cc turbo diesel engine that will be developed ‘in-house’ by MSIL (with assistance from a team of engineers from Suzuki, Japan.)
The new 0.8 Liter diesel engines would ensure two things-
- Maruti won’t have to pay royalty to some other car maker for the procurement and usage of their diesel engine (Currently, Maruti pays to Fiat for using their Multijet motor). This would enable MSIL to price its cars more competitively.
- A 0.8 liter diesel engine means that not just the Alto 800 but also the AStar and WagonR could soon get a diesel engine variant to battle it out against the diesel powered Chevrolet Beat and upcoming all new Hyundai i10.
Maruti already seems to be having another winner in his hands. What say?
