It has emerged that popular Indian car maker Maruti Suzuki, which is regarded as the king of small cars, is busy working on an all new premium hatchback that will be launched in 2015. The upcoming hatchback, which will be tailor made to suit Indian conditions, has been codenamed as the ‘YRA’ and will also be sold in other developing markets across the globe.
It is being said that the Maruti YRA hatchback will sit above the very popular Swift hatchback and is likely to become a direct rival to the Hyundai i20 and the upcoming new gen Honda Jazz. The YRA is currently in penultimate stages of development.
Not much is currently known about the upcoming YRA hatchback but it is expected that the car would be underpinned by a modified Suzuki Swift platform and would get a diesel engine from the upcoming range of Maruti Suzuki diesel engines.
We aren’t really surprised to hear about this development, what with rivals such Hyundai Motor India Ltd getting even stronger with the advent of new hatchbacks (read: Grand i1o)? With Honda having announced that the new gen Jazz will be launched in India with a diesel engine next year, maintaining its lead in the hatchback segment doesn’t seem too easy for Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.
This is exactly where new models, such as the YRA hatchback, would come into play and it would be nothing short of interesting to see how well they fare against cars like the 2014 Honda Jazz.
