Recently, Volkswagen India confirmed the much-needed sub-compact SUV for the Indian market. That news also makes the company’s latest SUV story from South Africa interesting. The new model is called Tengo there, and it will be built locally from 2027. It is based on the Tera sold in Brazil, but Volkswagen has made some changes for the South African market.
Where it will sit
The Tengo will be placed below the T-Cross in Volkswagen South Africa’s range. It will also sit close to the Polo and Polo Vivo in terms of positioning.
The company plans to build it at the Kariega plant in the Eastern Cape. This factory has been producing Volkswagen cars since 1951. Key points:

Volkswagen has invested R4 billion for the new model. The project is also important for the local factory, which has produced nearly 40 models and more than 4.8 million vehicles over the years.
The local production plan also comes at a time when cheaper imports from Suzuki, Mahindra, Chery and GWM Haval are putting pressure on established brands. Volkswagen wants a stronger answer in this price-sensitive market. Its long manufacturing history in South Africa gives the project extra importance.
Engine and possible options
Volkswagen has not shared the complete Tengo specification sheet yet. Reports suggest the SUV could use a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine at launch.
Expected figures include around 105 PS and 153 Nm. A 5-speed manual and 6-speed automatic gearbox are expected.
A 1.0-litre TSI engine could be added later. In Africa, this engine is offered in two versions, making 95 PS and 175 Nm or 116 PS and 200 Nm.
Why Is It Called Tengo?
Volkswagen had reportedly planned to use the Tera name in South Africa too. However, there was a naming conflict, so the company looked for another option.
Four names were considered: Tengo, Tavi, Tiva and Tion.
Tengo was selected after a public voting campaign. Volkswagen says the name is linked with ideas such as strength, resilience and purpose in African languages.
What About India?
The Indian version will be different in some important areas. Volkswagen has confirmed a new sub-four-metre SUV for India, with the launch planned for 2027.
It will use the MQB-A0-IN platform, which is also used by the Skoda Kylaq. This SUV is expected to become Volkswagen’s most affordable model in India.
The Indian name has not been confirmed yet.
