Ola Begins Construction of its “Gigafactory”: Cell Production to Start in 2024

Ola laid out the foundation of its Gigafactory in Tamil Nadu. Ola was able to acquire a massive plot of 115 acres upon which this facility will be built. Gigafactory facility will primarily focus on manufacturing battery cell units and upcoming models including a forthcoming electric car which company had teased in the past. Gigafactory will be India’s first battery production facility. Ola has plans to distribute these cells for other companies as well.

Initially, the company is aiming at a 5 GWh capacity, which will increase to a maximum capacity of 100GWh in the future if need be.

Currently, Ola sources its batteries from China for manufacturing all of its scooters, including the S1 and S1 Pro. Moreover Importing batteries adds an additional cost for EV manufacturers, thereby increasing the initial cost of the vehicle. Because the battery constitutes the most expensive component of an electric vehicle. Whereas having its own battery manufacturing facility will enable Ola to reduce prices for all of its electric vehicles. This strategic move marks the first step towards establishing India as a global EV hub, and we anticipate that other EV manufacturers will soon follow suit with their own plans to tackle the manufacturing batteries locally.

Present Plans

Presently, along with the Futurefactory and the upcoming Gigafactory, Ola electric also has owns an R and D facility in Bangalore. With everything combined Ola has some serious land and production capability. It is yet to be seen how it propels the company forward. Ola has three models in its portfolio the S1 and S1 pro has been selling well despite with the issues it had when it launched. A lot of those bugs and technical deformities has been rectified. And a third one is S1 Air which is set to be launched in July along with some major announcement.
