New Lamborghini Urus Claims A New Record At Pikes Peak

Being one of the most popular super SUVs the Lamborghini Urus is all set to jump into a new phase with a mid-life refresh. Ahead of its launch, Lamborghini announced the new milestone achieved by the new Urus. The new Urus claimed a new record at the climb of Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Pikes peak international hill climb is an Uphill race that recently celebrated its 100th race and is attempted by many carmakers and racing teams from around the world.

The new Urus was driven by Simone Faggioli who is a Hillclimb champion and Pirelli test driver, and he also won the rear-wheel drive record set in the 2018 ‘Race to the Clouds’ on Pikes Peak. The SUV was covered in a camouflage wrap to hide the updated SUV’s changes. The highlight of the race was the 156 turns that wind for 20 km (12.42 miles) at an altitude of 2862 meters which was 1439 meters higher than the average gradient of 7%, Fagioli successfully crossed the finish line which was further high at 4302 meters (14,115 ft), it took this supercar 10:32.064 to achieve the climb.

Since the updated Urus hasn’t been launched yet, it was not a part of the official race. However, its time was recorded by the official timekeepers of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The Urus broke both the previous PPIHC sanctioned non-race day manufacturer record of 12:35.610 set by Paul Dallenbach in 2014, and the current race day record of 10:49.902 by Rhys Millen, set in 2018, in a Bentley Bentayga.

Rouven Mohr, Chief Technical Officer of Automobili Lamborghini commented, “The decision to challenge ourselves at Pikes Peak fits into Lamborghini’s Expect the Unexpected spirit, and demonstrates the absolutely outstanding performance of the new Urus.”

The Urus gets its power from a familiar twin-turbo V8 engine, however, it went through little modification to match the safety regulations of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. The modification included a roll cage in the passenger compartment, while the standard seats were replaced by a race seat with a six-point harness and an addition of a fire extinguishing system was also there. For the race, the new Urus got Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires, the Pirelli semi-slick tire was codeveloped with Lamborghini for this SUV. These tires had more versatility and delivered a high performance both on dry asphalt with high ambient temperatures and on wet surfaces with colder temperatures.
