Mercedes Benz India, the Indian subsidiary of the much famed German luxury car maker, has launched the eagerly awaited diesel variant of the B Class in Indian car market. With the launch of B Class diesel, the carmaker has started calling B Class a Luxury tourer instead of Sports tourer.
Worth a mention here is that the Mercedes B Class, which was launched in our country last year, has been so far on sale with only a petrol engine variant and the lack of a diesel engine means that the car is falling short of exploiting all the sales potential that lies in the fast emerging diesel premium car segment of our car market. Now, it seems like Mercedes India has realized that there definitely is a large part of the segment which is left to be exploited and has finally decided to do something about it.
The new Mercedes B Class diesel variant is powered by the same 2.2-liter four cyl. diesel engine that powers the recently launched Mercedes A Class premium hatchback. For the B Class diesel variant, the motor has been tuned to offer a max power of 109bhp@3,200rpm and a peak torque of 25.5kgm@ 1,400rpm-2,800rpm. The car’s engine will come mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission that will send power to the front wheels of the car. The B Class diesel variant has a top speed of 190 kmph.
Mercedes India claims that the car has a fuel efficiency of 18.98 kmpl.
Unlike the B Class petrol, which was launched in both Sports and Style trim level, the B Class diesel has been launched in the Style trim only.
This means that the car misses out on panoramic sunroof and 17-inch alloy wheels. Sharing of the engine with the A Class, coupled with omission of some of the features has seen the B180 CDI coming to us at a very competitive price tag of INR 22.6 lakhs (ex showroom, Mumbai), considerable lower than the price of petrol variant.
The B180 CDI will go on sale in four color options-
- Jupiter Red
- Cirrus White
- Polar Silver
- Monolith Grey
